I am going to admit that I am one of “those” people. I will put up my Christmas tree before Thanksgiving. I know, I know…I have heard all about it from people for years, but I feel like I have some good points! In fact I have 5 reasons I put up my Christmas tree before Thanksgiving!
Growing up we always waited until Thanksgiving was over before putting up your Christmas tree. When I got married I continued in that tradition until a few years ago. I finally realized that I was in my 30's and could change “traditions” for my family if I wanted to. I also knew that putting the tree up on Thanksgiving weekend was too stressful for me. So…I went rogue and started putting my Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving!!

5 Reasons I Put Up My Christmas Tree Before Thanksgiving
Putting my tree up is a LOT of work!
I spend a lot of time decorating my tree. I sometimes put up more than one tree around the house and when you add in other Christmas decor…it is a lot of work!! I want to have extra time to enjoy it before I go to all the work to take it down.
I LOVE Christmas
I just love Christmas and want to stretch it out for as long as I can. I actually have to work hard the last few days before Christmas to not get SAD that it is almost over! I am just weird like that, lol! My husband has to remind me not to waste my last few days of the season by thinking about it being over!
I love to sit and look at the lights on the tree
I love to sit and look at the lights on the tree in the evenings….so the more evenings I have to enjoy the lights the happier I am! I can sit and look at twinkling lights and just be filled with joy! It is my happy place for sure!
There is somewhere to put the gifts
It is nice to have a place to put gifts as I get them wrapped. I don't always get gifts wrapped really early, but some years I do! It is so nice to just slide them under the tree instead of stacking the gifts in the corner! I know people who don't put their tree up until well into December…where do they put the gifts?? 🙂
IT MAKES ME HAPPY
The bottom line is that putting my tree up before Thanksgiving just MAKES me happy……so why not! It isn't a tradition that hurts anyone…so why not just bring a little more joy and happiness into the season by having longer to enjoy it!
I guess it all comes down to #5….having my Christmas tree up makes me happy, so why not do it!! For those of you who say that I am discounting Thanksgiving….I say that I am not! I enjoy Thanksgiving….I love spending the month of November focusing on my blessings. It's not as if I won't go to Thanksgiving dinner because my tree is up! I just count the tree as another thing to be thankful for!

I ~would~ set up my tree early but the weekend before Thanksgiving is my oldest daughters birthday! In fact we have a birthday in the family every month from September to February so I just have to get the tree up before December and I’m happy! Ha!
That would make it hard!! Sounds like months of festivities at your house!!
I put our bedroom trees (not our main tree because it’s live, ordered, and delivered the first Friday in December for freshness) up the day after Veteran’s Day. To us, Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful and celebrate family, of course, but it is part of the Christmas season to us so I would never wait until after to decorate. Plus all of your reasons too. I see some people say they decorate December 1st and take down the 26th. I couldn’t imagine taking my tree down before January 2nd! I wait all year for those magical nights enjoying the lights of my tree. I wouldn’t cut them short for the world
I so agree Tori! So glad I am not the only one!! I am at Disney World right now looking at all the wonderful decorations and I am all geared up to head home and put my decorations up!! Thanks so much for commenting!
I used to always put mine up the day after Thanksgiving, but last year I put it up early to enjoy it longer and I think I will do the same this year. The lights and angelic ornaments just make me feel so good. I just hope my 3 year old will leave it alone this year. Lol!
It is great to have that extra time to enjoy the tree!! Have a great Thanksgiving!!
Hi, my name is Sheri.
And I was delighted to see your post about putting up your tree early!
I have been putting up my tree in Oct and I decorate it for Halloween and then I usually do a thanksgiving theme…
But this year I was so excited to get my new tree that I just went for it!
It’s true, it makes me So happy to see my tree lit up at night.
Although I still have pumpkins outside! Lol
Thank you for not making me feel crazy for telling my friends that I already have my Christmas tree up!
Hi Sheri…you aren’t crazy!! 🙂 So glad your tree brings you as much happiness as mine does!! Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
Fake trees are ugly. Why would you want longer to look at a fake plastic tree?
First off…that was extremely rude. Secondly—you know nothing of my life or the fact that my husband is deathly allergic to trees and having a real tree would cause him horrible issues all season. I hope you can find some actual Christmas joy this year instead of leaving rude comments on a blog that tries to bring joy to others.
I’m allergic too!
I have a rose gold tinsel tree that I think is the prettiest thing in the world!
What is not pretty, is having an asthma attack because of a real tree in my house.
Also, Rupert’s attitude isn’t very pretty either.
Get a life Rupert. You’re attitude is ugly.
Rupert, stop being such a troll and take your ugly attitude with you. I am grateful for all the things that I am blessed with and I love any kind of christmas tree! plastic or not.
I’ve been considering putting mine up maybe this week or next. I need a little Christmas right this very minute! 😊
HI Amber, I hear you…it has been a hard fall for me for a variety of reasons…I am starting TOMORROW this year!! 🙂 Merry Christmas a little early!
Yess!! Im fixin to put up my tree(s) tonight and tomorrow and am so glad there are other people that choose to do so for some of the very reasons I do! Thanks for sharing your post with us. And by the way rude sir up above, some of the MOST stunning trees I have seen in my life are artificial! I have 4 artificial trees and I can guarantee you they are NOT ugly🎄Don’t ever let anyone steal your love for Christmas and decorations..I know I sure wont! Happy Veteran’s Day, Happy Thanksgiving, and Merry Christmas to ALL…even the Scrooges of the world💖
Everyone think it’s to early to put up an Christmas treetree in November .My siblings even stated that I was disrespecting Thanksgiving, but how is that true? I love Thanksgiving and I feel as it should be ok to to have a tree up before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving feels like Christmas too…..HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
You Too!!
I’m having a brunch before Thanksgiving….with all the cleaning and prepping I may as well go all out. Enjoy

I love Christmas and I always put my tree up day after Thanksgiving, but last year I put my tree up Thanksgiving day but that wasn’t a good idea after all that cooking on that day or after putting a tree up can take a lot of work so I decided for now on my tree is going up a week before Thanksgiving. I just love Thanksgiving and Christmas put together. We in October Halloween and I’m already watching hallmark Christmas movies. I just love the holidays I just wanna enjoy the Christmas tree every minute that i can
Thank u to all who put your trees up before thanksgiving a lot of times I put my tree up before thanksgiving. It really gets you in the Christmas spirit more and Christmas is my favorite time of year so thank you thank you thank you and god bless all who put there trees up before thanksgiving
If they can start the Christmas movies early so can I put up a tree , LOL I am known as Mrs Christmas and the earlier the better I say. I take alot of time and its tons of work. I am the main and only decorator here so I like to take my time. On the day after Thanksgiving I am relieved its done so if shopping is done my gifts go right under the tree. I think me and the author of this article could be super friends, LOL Merry Christmas 2020, we all need a little Christmas right this very minute!!
Exactly!!
I usually put my Tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving like most people. But last year I was pulling out my hair putting everything up. I was mad because I wanted to spend time with my son while he was out of school. I am getting older. I am 46 now and I have to be honest I don’t move fast like I use to. It now takes me the entire Thanksgiving weekend, sometimes spilling over into the following week, to put up Christmas. Christmas is very special in my house. It’s not just about Jesus for me, It’s a time of healing. The lights and décor bring me comfort. I will never stop celebrating it.
But I was feeling guilty about putting it up early. But your article convinced me to go ahead and do it. Thank you! I think I will put it up the weekend before Thanksgiving. That way I can enjoy Thanksgiving Weekend with my family doing other things.
I couldn’t agree more!! Have a wonderful holiday season Robyn!
I loved reading this and learning I’m in good company! Also, that I’m not the only one who has to work hard Dec 22, 23, 24…at not being sad that Christmas is almost over! I decorate a LOT for Xmas-both interior and exterior (think exterior lights like Griswold house in Christmas Vacation!) and since it’s just me and my son, it’s all up to me. That takes time. So I generally start prep work beginning of October, put up exterior lights and decor immediately after Halloween and then interior before Thanksgiving. But, after reading this and since we’re in a new house that I can’t wait to decorate, I’m starting on the interior decoration and putting up my Xmas tree this weekend!!
Your home sounds wonderful at Christmas! Thanks for sharing!
I put my Christmas decorations up the weekend following Thanksgiving. I do not do it earlier because I devote October to Halloween, and I go all out for the holiday—both outdoors and indoors. Halloween at my home is such a fun time. In recent years, I have also really gotten into decorating my home for Thanksgiving. The combination of fall-colored leaf decorations that light up, plus scarecrows, pumpkins, cornucopia, and even a lighted artificial “Thanksgiving tree” covered in fall-colored leaves makes such a beautiful and relaxing setting to relax and enjoy. I would not want to skip the experience and ambience this holiday decor allows me to create.
I always put up my Christmas tree very early. By October my christmas tree is standing up . I love christmas and I dedicate the ber months to Jesus. Christmas is for Christ and having Christmas Tree in my house while anticipating the most joyous season of the year just bring so much gladness in my heart and my family. Kids doing trick or treat always wanted to see my tree. I came from Philippines. Growing up we never have a xmas tree. My mom never bought one and she never care celebrating xmas either. However, my heart was full of joy during the xmas season even with no gifts or anything. Me and my brother used to play pretend and put candies in our own homemade xmas socks that we hang in our door. In a very young age I learned that santa is not real and I made my self think that my santa claus is Jesus himself. He never disappointed me. The word xmas just gave me so much happiness. My dad was the first person in my life that bought a xmas light and thats after him and my mom separated. I was very happy to see the lights in our house since then I told my self when I grow up and have a family of my own, I will celebrate Christmas and will have a Christmas tree even a very small tree….
I am so glad that Christmas brings you as much joy as it does me! I know the kids in your area will be excited to see your tree when they trick or treat! I hope you have a wonderful holiday this year. I have another website dedicated to just CHRISTMAS! Check it out! https://peacelovechristmas.com/ Thanks so stopping by!
Hello I’m 42 and ever since the last 4-5 years I have put up my tree after Nov,1st. I love Thanksgiving & Christmas myself so I just can’t wait to decorate. Happy Holidays
This year I actually have to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to decorate. We are getting new carpet the week of Thanksgiving and it is impossible to put the tree up and then have to try to move it! I am sad I have to wait so long!! Hope your holidays are amazing! Thanks for reading.
