We are nearing Father's Day and I wanted to make something special for my husband from our youngest blessing! I was looking around my craft room and my eyes settled on one of my obsessions….my buttons! I thought that maybe I should put some of these buttons to good use and I came up with this Button Handprint Craft!
This is really simple to make and at the bottom of this post you can even print off the poem as a background to make your own Button Handprint Craft!
Supplies Needed for Button Handprint Craft
Hot Glue Sticks
8 x 10 Frame (optional)
How to Make a Button Handprint Craft
First you will print off the FREE PRINTABLE that has the sweet Father's Day saying on it. Print it on a sheet of white cardstock.
If you want to frame this button handprint craft for a gift you will need to cut the cardstock down to 8 x 10 with your paper trimmer. Take 1/4 inch off each side and 1/2 inch off the top.
Now you will take your child's hand and lightly draw their handprint using a pencil. Be sure to have them spread their fingers apart nicely. You can also have your child sign the poem…I helped my 3-year-old sign her project!
You can use any color of buttons you would like. I decided to do my button handprint craft with all black buttons. It is best to use an assortment of sizes and types of buttons. For small handprints you will need some pretty small buttons! If you don't have a stash of thousands of buttons like I do…check out the great variety and cheap prices on Amazon!
Now you will want to kind of lay out the buttons in a single layer on your handprint. It is kind of like a puzzle….fitting different sized buttons together to fill in as much white as you can.
Once you get the bottom layer situated you can start gluing each button down. BEWARE…the hot glue will go through the holes in the buttons…so BE CAREFUL! Yes…I did burn my fingers multiple times during this project despite my own knowledge and warnings, LOL! I have never used hot glue that I didn't get burned though.
Now that the bottom layer is glued on you will want to make a sporadic top layer….I tried to position buttons over areas of white that were showing through.
Let the hot glue dry nicely and then you can get rid of those pesky glue strings…I used a pair of tweezers to get in between the buttons to grab the little glue strings.
If you want to frame your button handprint craft project you can do that now.
This is a great Father's Day gift and something dad will cherish…seeing his little one's hand print frozen in time with buttons!
What homemade gifts do you like to make with your children? Do you have any special plans for Father's Day?
