ways to combat stress

Get Enough Sleep

First, you need to make sure that you are getting the right level of sleep. Sleep is critical to avoid high levels of stress. You might have heard that you can function on two to three hours of sleep. While this is true, it’s never going to provide the best benefits. To deliver the greatest benefits, you need to aim to get about eight hours of sleep each and every night. This is often easier said than done. We recommend that you make sure to try to improve your overall sleep environment. For instance, you could think about getting blackout blinds as a way to avoid issues with light pollution that will keep you up late at night.

Practice Breathing Techniques

The next thing that we’re going to mention is that you could try practicing different breathing techniques. If you look these up online, there are a variety of ones that you can choose from, settling on the one that helps you to keep your calm and composure in as many situations as possible.

While you might not think that breathing is an effective stress relief, it really can be. It works by helping you to calm your fight or flight system that has gone into overdrive, lowering the cortisol that is running through your body. Stress causes this instinct to kick in and this hormone to go into overdrive, but the proper breathing techniques can help bring calm back to your body.

Speak To Professionals

If you need help with past or present trauma then help is available for you. There are numerous professionals out there including counselors and therapists that you can speak to about anything you want. Unburden yourself and lift the weight off your shoulders, make sure you only seek a reputable counselor. The last thing you want is to not find them helpful and then have to leave and go elsewhere.

Counseling and therapy often comes with a taboo attached to it, as many people see it as a weakness. Let us tell you, it is not a sign of weakness, it is actually a sign of great strength. You could speak to friends and family about your issues but it is sometimes best to have a non-biased opinion.

It’s Okay To Say No

Don’t be afraid to say no. This is something that has been ingrained in our brains since childhood, that it is wrong to say no. However, if there is something you don’t want to do then tell the person asking you that you don’t want to. Saying no is a very powerful thing and means you are in control of not only your own mind but your body and decision making as well. If you have children then teaching them to say no to things is natural, obviously saying no to school or eating their dinner is another battle.

Practice saying no, it can seem a little weird at first. Once you have it, you will often find yourself saying no or no thank you to many things. Do be aware, that if you continuously say no to something like going out with friends then they could stop asking and you will alienate yourself from the group.

Find A Hobby

Another thing you can do is find yourself a hobby. Hobbies have been known to naturally reduce stress levels as you are doing something that you enjoy. The key here is to find something you want to do, not something you are forced to do. It could be absolutely anything from gaming, reading, to chilling in the bath.

If you love all things related to gaming then this can be done online, offline, and even with good old fashioned board games. You can play solo games such as solitaire or chess online. If you don’t want to play chess with anyone else then you can play against the computer at a level that suits you.

Something you might not think of as a hobby is exercise. However, if you enjoy it and it makes you feel good then why not? It could be anything from running around your local park after work to swimming a few lengths in your nearest pool. As long as you are enjoying yourself then absolutely anything could turn into a hobby.

Be Nice To Yourself

Think about how you can be nicer to yourself. The issue with your stress levels might actually be coming from the words and feelings you have about yourself. If you don’t like the way you look then this can make you feel ten times worse. Practice standing in front of the mirror saying kind things to yourself.

While you may feel a bit silly and that you look ridiculous, this method really helps with confidence, self esteem, and high stress levels. Do it in the mornings as you are getting ready for work, even after you have just got out of the shower. Start by saying things like ‘i am great’ you can then work on other things and positive affirmations.

It can take a lot of practice to stand in front of a mirror and be nice to yourself. However, once you have mastered it, you will be able to do it without even realizing.

Get Away For A Bit

There is nothing better than going away for a bit when you are struggling with your stress levels. Don’t be afraid to book some time off from work, or ask family members to take care of children while you find yourself again. This could be a weekend away, a week, or even longer. However, if you are away for too long then you might not want to come back. Try and stick to less time away, a week can be ideal for some people.

You can have a staycation in your hometown or you could venture a little further away. You might absolutely love traveling but haven’t been able to do it for some time due to other commitments. If you have a list of places you would like to visit then start working your way through this. If money allows for it, you could travel at least twice a year ticking these locations off the list. Make sure you take some time for yourself, chill on a beach or by the pool. Recollect yourself and then come back happy with no stress.

Learn To Delegate

If you are finding yourself overwhelmed with high levels of stress then you might need to learn to delegate. This can work for both home life and work life, if you are a manager at work then you can ask your employees to step up a bit more. However, knowing what stress and being overloaded feels like, don’t treat your employees the same way.

Make a list of all the things that need to be settled and organized both at home and work. Slowly go through this list and watch as your stress levels just melt away. If you are a business owner then make sure you remain approachable and flexible with your approach to delegating.

Reduce Bad Habits

Finally, when you indulge in bad habits you are feeding your stress levels. You might think that smoking or drinking makes you feel better, however it only makes things worse in the long run. While it makes you feel amazing to begin with, the come down can impact your stress levels massively. It can be incredibly difficult to break this habit, however, that doesn’t mean it is impossible. You may need to use sheer willpower to overcome the cravings, you could also speak to an expert in the field.

Do your research and find out which methods might work best for you. For instance, if you are wanting to cut down or quit smoking then patches and gum are two solutions you could try. Some people have found going cold turkey very effective, but this won’t work for everyone.

We do hope you found this article helpful and that it gave you some ideas on how you can combat stress. There will come a time when everyone is affected by stress and other mental health conditions. Finding the light at the end of the tunnel is the best way to overcome these issues and struggles.
