If you’re going to be raising a baby and this is the first time, you might think that you’ve got it all figured out. The truth is that you don’t, and that’s okay. You don’t need to have it all figured out right now, as there is no need to. As a parent, you are going to make mistakes, you’re going to get things wrong, and you’re generally going to struggle from time to time, and it’s okay to admit that.
We understand that unsolicited advice can be annoying, but seeing as you’re reading this article, we’re going to go ahead and assume that you’re okay with us giving you some advice about your little one. I wrote this article to help those who are struggling in certain areas and those who don’t yet feel 100% confident. You will get there!

It’s Okay To Walk Away When You’re Overwhelmed
There are going to be times as a parent where you get overwhelmed. Perhaps your baby has been screaming and crying for hours on end, you’ve tried everything that you can and nothing seems to be working. This is hard for a multitude of reasons, one being that your baby is upset and you don’t know why, and the second being that your feelings are now sky high with no way to bring them back down.
So, what they don’t tell you when you’re having a baby is that it’s okay to put your baby down somewhere safe and walk away until you are calm. This is much better than accidentally shaking your baby which is extremely dangerous, and it’s better than getting yourself wound up to the point where you feel as though you’re going to explode.
As long as they are safe, you can go and have five minutes to yourself to help you calm down. Once you feel calm again, you can come back and attempt to soothe them. But, if you’re not calm, they can sense this and there’s no way that they are going to be either.
You Need To Care For Baby’s Skin And Hair, Now
Another thing you may not know is that you need to care for their skin and hair from the time they are born. If you do not do this, then the chances are that they will have issues in both of these areas, neither of which is very pleasant. Of course, a baby does not need an elaborate skincare routine, but what they do need is to be moisturized regularly to avoid skin conditions such as dry skin, eczema, and others.
On the other hand, your baby’s hair needs to be taken care of, depending on the type of hair they have. If they have what is considered normal hair, then simply washing and brushing it is going to be enough while they are young. However, for those little babies with curly hair, there’s more to caring for curls than straight hair. It’s worth looking into hair products for babies with curly hair so that you can get what you need to ensure their curls thrive rather than fade.
Sometimes They Just Cry, It’s Okay
There are going to be times when you have fed them, changed them, winded them, and done everything that you can think of to make them stop crying, but they just don’t want to quit. It can be overwhelming and frustrating when this happens, but it’s completely normal. Sometimes babies just cry, and it’s okay; it’s not anything that you need to worry about. Just hold them, soothe them as best you can, and eventually they will stop.
Remember, babies communicate with their cries, and they are not doing it to manipulate you; they are simply communicating with you the only way that they can.

Safe Sleeping Is A Must
When you are raising a baby you must, must, must keep them safe at all times. This includes while they are sleeping. Safe sleeping practices should be followed when you have a baby to minimize unnecessary risk. If they are going to be using a Moses basket, bedside crib, or cot, then you can practice ‘feet to foot’. This is the safest method to prevent them from being affected by SIDS, and nobody wants that to happen.
However, if you want to co-sleep with your baby, then think about how practical this really is. Do you have space in your bed, will you roll onto them, and will they be covered accidentally by your duvet? These are all questions you need to ask yourself before you put your baby to bed. If you are worried about something happening, but you still wish to co sleep with your child then how about investing in a bedside crib. They will still be in your bed, just not at risk of harm.
They Don’t Need Washing Every Single Day
Finally, you might think that your baby needs a bath or hose down every single day. This isn’t the case as babies and young children simply don’t get dirty. If you were to lie on the carpet or play mat all day, then you wouldn’t get dirty either. Newborn babies should only be sponged down until the umbilical cord drops off. If you get this wet then it could lead to infections of the wound site.
Babies have super sensitive skin so they only need water in their baths, you won’t need to fill the bath with bubbles as you might do for yourself. You don’t want to aggravate their skin, which can lead to complications down the line.
So, there you have it. Hopefully, you now have a greater understanding of some of the things you can go through as a parent. These are all completely normal and can be experienced by any parent at any time. Remember, parenting doesn’t come with a rule book, and you learn along the way.
