Learning how to balance independence and safety with toddlers so we can get more done is a question many parents ask. If you have parented a toddler you know that gaining some independence is high on the child's list of wants! It is very hard for parents to allow their toddler any independence because safety is such a concern with little ones. There are some ways you can help your toddler be more independent while still keeping safety a top priority and you will be able to do more knowing your child is safe!
I am parenting my 4th toddler…so I have been down this road before. It really does seem to get easier with each one…I guess I know that the older kids survived me…this one will too, LOL! I have gained some insight over the years on the best ways to balance independence and safety with toddlers though! Here are some ways I helped my toddler gain some independent play time and I was able to get some housework done!
Top Tips for How to Balance Independence and Safety with Toddlers
Have Designated Safe Play Areas
The old philosophy about child proofing really pays off with toddlers! The work you put in child proofing when you baby was crawling and pulling up….makes a much safer place for toddlers also. If you know that an area is safe for your toddler to play you will be more comfortable allowing them to play while you are getting things done around the house. Have at least one set “safe” area in your home that your child can play.
Keep Doors to the Outside Locked
It is a great idea to keep your doors to the outside locked even when you are safe at home. I personally think this is a good idea even if you DON'T have toddlers….but especially if you do! If you are attempting to let your toddler play independently in their bedroom while you make lunch it is a great idea to keep the outside doors locked. Toddlers are very unpredictable and could get a notion that they want to take a look outside. Chances are high that they won't ask you first, lol! If you know the doors are locked it will lessen their abilities to get out of the house undetected or quickly!
Have Age Appropriate Toys Available to Keep Them Active
Toys are toys, right….I would say WRONG! There really are age appropriate toys for babies and toddlers. Try to take the time to go through your child's toys every three to six months or so and take out toys that are too young or too old for them and add items that are more developmentally appropriate. If your child has appropriate toys to play with they are more likely to stay entertained and active. Since we have older children I have to be careful that toys my older kids play with don't make their way into my toddler's toy box! Having the right toys and items for your toddler to play with will increase their enjoyment and lessen your worry!
Keep Eyes on Them
I think we can all agree that when we are seeing what our children are doing first hand…we feel the most reassurance of their safety and well-being. Thanks to the advancements in technology we can watch our children play independently in another room of the house without actually being in that room ourselves!
