Cat Litter Provides a Solution for Smelly Shoes
Cat Litter Helps Dry Up the Bacteria Causing the Smell
Many times the odor in your shoes is actually caused by bacteria growth….I know…gross! Let's be realistic though…shoes have dark, moist insides…the perfect breeding ground for bacteria! One of the basic functions of a good cat litter is to absorb moisture. This will help the moisture in your shoes too!
Cat Litter Works Great as a Deodorizer
Sometimes the shoes at my house aren't totally rank….they just have that sweaty, used smell to them. When you multiply that by a bunch of shoes….the smell can add up. Cat litter can help neutralize and deodorize the smell in the shoes.
How to Use Cat Litter as a Solution for Smelly Shoes
You can make small bags of cat litter to put into your shoes overnight. The next day you should notice a marked improvement in the smell of your shoes!! It is really easy to make these neutralizing cat litter bags! These little cat litter sachets really work!
Supplies Needed for Cat Litter Sachets
First get some cat litter….I love to get the huge 42 pound bag of Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze at Sam's Club. I love the Lemongrass citrus scent of this cat litter and the odor controlling power of Febreze that is has. The bag has a convenient handle and is simple to reseal. Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze is available exclusively at Sam's Club and you will save $3.50 with the May Instant Savings Book.
This litter is PERFECT for cat litter sachets because it contains Borate Technology that actually acts as an antimicrobial agent and helps inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria!
Material that is at least 10-15 inches square
Sharp Scissors or Pinking Shears
Twist ties or heavy-duty rubber bands
Ribbon
How to Make Cat Litter Sachets
First you will take your material and cut it into a circle. I don't do well cutting a circle free hand so I used a lid to draw a pattern on the back of my material first. Lids worked great because I made several different sizes of sachets and I have lots of different sized lids!
Next you will cut out your circle with your scissors or pinking shears. I love the zig zag pattern the pinking shears cuts and thought it would make the sachets even cuter! Remember you can cut different sized circles and make multiple bags in various sizes for the different sizes of shoes you have at your house!
Now you will put some of your Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze litter onto your material. The amount you use will depend on the size of your circle. You need to have enough room to pull the material up into a bunch at the top and close it. I used about a 1/2 cup for this circle.
Gather the material up so and secure it with a twist tie very tightly. A rubber band would also work at the top as long as it is a thick, heavy-duty rubber band. Add a bow around the twist tie for a cute finish.
Last you will put the cat litter sachet into your shoe and let it sit overnight.
The best part about making these cat litter sachets is that you can keep the supplies on hand and reuse them over and over! Just cut out a bunch of circles and keep those on hand for when you need to solve those smelly shoe problems. I had to crack up because my kids think these smell so good they want to just sit them out in their rooms as air freshener!
Giving Back
If you are a cat lover you probably know how many cats are abandoned. When we got our 2 cats we adopted them from our vet. The kittens had been dumped on the animal clinic's doorstep after hours. 😥 When you are deciding which charities to help…don't forget about giving to organizations in your area that help cats and other animals! My son did some volunteer work last Fall for the Cowley County Humane Society and I was really impressed with the efforts they are making in our area! I was thrilled that the generous people at Fresh Step allowed me to give back in my area by helping me donate $100 to a local pet charity! I hope this money will help the kitties at the Cowley County Humane Society find good homes!

Teen daughter’s Converse shoes always smell! I stick dryer sheets in them overnight. Sorry, no cats here…cute idea though!
How many times can you use one cat litter shoe sachet?
Hi Kellee, I usually use it for one day/night and then switch out the litter, but reuse the fabric. You can also throw the fabric in the washer if it starts to smell bad. The litter can only be used so long because it has absorbed all the yuck! 🙂
