10 Trips for Staying Healthy When Traveling
Pace Yourself
Visiting new places is so exciting that we tend to go overboard on sightseeing. I have been known to pack in activities from sun up till sun down. It is great to be able to experience so much of our destination, but typically we get worn out really fast. It took me several years to realize that pacing ourselves worked a lot better and prevented us from wearing out! Getting worn down is an easy way to get sick.
Eat Breakfast Every Day
We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that is especially true when traveling. We need that nutritional boost to start our day right. This is also an easy way to save some money by purchasing some healthy breakfast items and keeping them in your room so there are no excuses for missing this meal.
Hand Washing is a Must
Travel may expose us to “new” germs that we are not typically exposed to. We encounter so many people when we travel and are constantly touching items in public that could potentially be covered in germs. As a nurse, I can not recommend hand washing enough! We try to wash our hands whenever we have a chance on vacation. During those times when we don't have access to soap and running water then we use hand sanitizer that I carry in my bag.
Don't Forget the Fruit and Veggies
We have more challenges getting enough fruits and veggies when we travel. Dining out while vacationing can get hard. It is so easy to grab some fresh fruit that doesn't require refrigeration and keep it in the room. We try to make sure to order food that comes with a salad or steamed veggies to help get those needed nutrients.
Remember Your Skin
Whether you are going to the beach on vacation or the mountains, chances are you will spend a lot of time outside. Remembering to protect your skin from the sun is super important. I like to keep a travel sized sunscreen in my bag for reapplication during the day.
Stay Hydrated
We always do so much walking on vacation that we need to stay hydrated. Many families vacation during the summer when the temperatures are hotter and drinking plenty of water is a must. I try to limit our sugary drinks on trips so we can drink more water. This also helps keep my husband's blood sugar level. Keeping a water bottle with us helps out too!
Take Your Vitamins
It may be hard to get all the vitamins and minerals you need when traveling. My family never leaves home without our vitamins. My husband loves to keep his Nature Made® Daily Diabetes Health Pack with him at home and on vacation.
I just ordered another box from Sam's Club online. Nature Made® Daily Diabetes Health Pack inspires healthy choices for a Diabetic to live a healthy lifestyle and I love that!!
Nature Made® Daily Diabetes Health Pack is scientifically formulated to supply nutritional support for people with diabetes or prediabetes and it has essential omega-3 fatty acids that help support a healthy heart.† It is important to me that my husband take a high quality product that can be his daily partner. Warm Up
I don't know about you, but I always have sore muscles on vacation. Sleeping in a different bed with a different pillow usually throws my neck and back into a tizzy. The extra walking while we sight see can make my legs sore. I think you get the picture, LOL. I have learned over the years that taking a little time in the morning and stretching my muscles out will really help limit my soreness. Five or ten minutes is usually plenty of time to leave me feeling refreshed and ready for the day.
Don't Slack on Sleep
It is easy to skimp on sleep when you are exploring a new place. DON'T do it!! It will only lead to fatigue and you may be more likely to get sick. Sleep is so important to good health and will also give you the energy to see the world!
Relax and Breathe
I have been stressed out many times on trips. Large crowds, unexpected delays, unplanned costs can all send me into orbit. I have to give myself a little time out and BREATHE. Taking some extra time to relax and deep breathe can save me from mental stress. I never want to ruin a good trip by allowing circumstances I can't control to upset me.
