I am sure if you had asked my parents 30 years ago if I would ever eat ham and beans….they would have told you…NO WAY! It is not a dish I liked growing up…I was a VERY narrow-minded eater as a child…and I still am in some areas. Luckily, I have outgrown some of my dislikes and broadened by eating palette a little bit to include Cajun Ham and Beans!
When I got married, one of my husband's favorite meals with his family was ham and beans with fried potatoes. I didn't want to be rude…so I ate some…and actually loved it! I even started requesting it for my birthday dinner some years.
I saw a package in the store a while back for a Cajun 15 bean soup mix. It was basically just a bag of beans…a mixture of 15 kinds of beans plus some Cajun seasoning. I decided it would be worth a try. I have heard that this mix isn't available everywhere in the country. Luckily, Amazon sells almost everything! 🙂 You can buy this on Amazon and it even has free Prime shipping! Click HERE to check it out if you can't find it locally!
I am here to say that Cajun Ham and Beans was a really great change from just plain ham and beans! I added ham to this Cajun mix and cooked it in the crock pot all day long! The smells coming from the crock pot were wonderful! I decided to put this over rice. My husband choose to put his over cornbread! Either way it was a great meal. Definitely a good meal for a cold winter night!
The Cajun seasoning was just right. It wasn't spicy, but added a new dimension to the ham and beans. I also liked the variety of beans in the mixture….I usually use pinto beans when I make ham and beans. I loved all the different sizes and colors of this bean mixture!
There are directions on the package for ways to make it. I didn't go with the package. I just made this the way I normally make ham and beans in the crock pot. You can use the package directions if you want to.
I would love to know if you have ever tried Cajun Ham and Beans and if so…what do you serve it with?

- 1 bag Hurst's Cajun 15 Bean Soup
- 1-2 cups chopped ham
- 8 + cups of water
-
The night before you plan to make this meal you want to soak your beans. Take a medium sized pot and put the beans in it. Set the Cajun seasoning packet aside. Cover the beans with water allowing for several inches of water to be above the layer of beans.
-
The next morning drain all the water off the beans and place the beans in a large slow cooker.
-
Add the ham and the seasoning packet to the slow cooker.
-
Add about 8 cups of water to the slow cooker. You want plenty of water especially if you won't be home to check on the beans during the day. The water should completely cover the ingredients with a couple of extra inches.
-
Cook this on low for 6-8 hours or until the beans are soft and ready to eat.
-
You can add extra salt and pepper to taste.
-
This is great served over rice or with cornbread.
Edible beans are a raw agricultural product. Always be sure to check for any debris or rocks in your bags of beans before eating!
This makes a large crock pot of soup!
