Back gardens get a lot of attention in the landscaping world. You can fill them with all kinds of plants and features, as well as instantly get the lowdown on how to keep them low maintenance and stress free!
Front gardens, on the other hand, can be a little neglected. They’re an important feature in the curb appeal of a property, but trying to find some inspiration or expert tips on curating your front door area can be slow going and a little lacking!
And we want to fix that! As such, we’ve put together a few great ways to design a stunning front garden from the ground up. If you’re looking for just a few pointers on where to get started or what might be missing, this is the list for you!
Dig it Out
You can’t redo a front garden without tearing out the bones of the old one. Without completing this step first, your curb appeal efforts are going to be less impactful than you really would like them to be! That won’t leave you satisfied with the job, and you’ll just want to start all over again.
So save yourself the trouble by just digging it all out straight away. Get to know the kind of ground you’re working with. You should have an idea of the soil type and the condition it’s in, and whether or not you could do with breaking it up a bit to let the worms wiggle through it!
But on top of that, you should also get the chance to prepare the ground for the major rehaul you’re planning. And if you find that you’re going to need to pop some paving stones on top and be done with it, that’s a good thing!
You can then focus on the kind of planter and/or window boxes you’ll need instead, as well as any pots you can set in place for the solo stunners you want to seed.
Long story short, digging out the front garden before trying to work on your curb appeal arms you with information. Now you can put a proper plan for the space together, and you won’t have to worry about whether or not something is going to fit or work.
Add Some Color
Color is the most important thing when it comes to your curb appeal. You can’t let everything be just the one color, or in just the one color palette. It’s nice to have so much green outside your front door, but you can’t let the entire space be blooming with different green hues. It’ll just be boring!
Throw in a bit of contrast, wherever you can. Have bright flowers sown into your porch pots, and make sure they’re a kind of flower that grows pretty tall as well. You want them to stand out AND be colorful enough to break up the hum-drum monochrome you’re currently dealing with.
And speaking of contrast…
Contrast plant colors with your door and windows
It’s the easiest way to make sure your house looks both cohesive and colorful! First, get your head around the color wheel and what colors sit opposite to each other on it. Red and green, purple and yellow, white and black, etc., are all contrasting colors.
And while that means they don’t exactly flow from one to the next, they do make each stand out better. At the very least, they’re not a boring color combo – and they’ll certainly add some drama to your front door and porch.
Add Some Texture
Texture is essential in the curb appeal world. You need to have something a bit more interactive in your front garden space than just grass and smooth stone leading up to the door. You need to focus on the way our senses interact with the environment around us as well.
And to do that, you should head down to a home store and buy gravel, wood chips, shingle, or ‘crazy’ paving and use them in your design. If you want to use more than one texture, go ahead. It adds a bit more of a tactile element to your curb appeal, and that always boosts property image.
Plus, the more texture there is, the more noisy the front garden is going to be. While that might not sound great, it’s actually a secret security feature that lets you know if anyone is approaching your home.
If you hear the crunching of footsteps, you know there’s someone outside – which is very useful if you don’t have any motion lights or a front door camera installed quite yet.
Don’t Just Rely on Grass
We’ve mentioned it before, we’ll mention it again! Grass is great as a plant. It provides a uniform green look to an outdoor space, and most people will instantly get grass down on the ground when they want to add some aesthetic appeal.
However, grass can be boring. It’s really quite overused, and it can even be a bit bad for the local environment too.
And if it turns out that you do just like the look and feel of grass outside your home, try to plant different kinds of grass. Don’t keep it short and clipped and bright green. Let rougher, taller grass types germinate as well.
