I sometimes have trouble making a firm decision….the majority of the time I am very decisive….but there are some things that I just really waiver on.
One area that really gets me stumped is HOME DECOR! I am not naturally blessed with the gift of decorating my home to look like the magazines. I can't always decide what will look good.
Our family room is a case in point!! I haven't been able to decide what to put on the walls in our family room so I just haven't put anything on the walls….for over 5 YEARS!!! Yes…you heard me right….we have lived in our current house for almost 6 years now. The walls have NEVER had anything on them!!
My plan has never been to take THAT long to decide what to put up….I think about it regularly. I just don't make a decision and go with it! My husband asked me the other day if we were ever going to put anything up in that room…that is when it hit me how LONG it has been!!! Sad, I know.
The back wall of the room has a small shelf and chair rail type thing that runs the whole length of the wall. It goes all the way over the stairwell to the basement. That makes the upper wall a little more narrow….so that has thrown me off. I will get an idea…then decide I don't like it…or I can't find exactly what I want at the store…you know what I mean.
BUT…with my word of the year being “INTENTIONAL” I have decided that I can't put this off forever. I actually bought some frames last year for this room…now to just get them on the wall.
I guess it boils down to the simple fact….action is better than just doing nothing. I may not love the end result…but at least I will have tried. I can always change the decor (in another 5 years…ha,ha,ha) if I don't like what I create!
So…here is to some accountability! My goal is to get the decor hung up before the end of January and post the pictures!

What if you used the ledge of the wall as a picture rail to set various sized frames with prints or family photos on? If you have smaller photos, you could add a rail across the middle of that space as well. I did something similar in my hallway. I like how I can display a ton of photos, that might typically overwhelm an area if displayed differently, in a gallery style. The frames coordinate for the most part, but they don’t all match and switching them out is a breeze.
Thanks for the tip Karen! I do have LOTS of pictures! If you have a picture of your hallway you could send me I would love to see it!
Hey Jamie! Love that u are doing this blog! A warm paint on the walls would be a good place to start and then, since you like the gallery idea and you have those kiddos — what about framing (say, in 11×14 or 16×20 simple, dark brown matching or at least similar) special pieces of art they have created? It adds color, sentiment, and meaning to the space…which u will enjoy for years to come. You can swap them out when u want, too. It’s a great way to honor their hard work! I did this in my upstairs hallway and have loved it as the kids have grown. With the ledge, I’d try a line of equi-distant frames for a more modern, graphic look. I purchased black art paper at the craft store for the background of each (but, I also used black frames for my decor). You could use the same color for consistency, like cream or white, or jazz it up with colors to complement – but be careful! That may distract from the art and make the wall look too busy.
Have fun and take a chance- it’s only decorating! :).
Kimberly, thanks for the ideas…you are obviously a pro at home decor!!! I do have tubs full of kids artwork!! Thanks so much for the help.
