Most kids know that turkey is the main dish on most American Thanksgiving tables. They may not know the history of how the turkey came to be the star of the show.
While kids are coloring these turkey coloring pages you can spend some time sharing these turkey facts with them.
- Although most people assume that turkey was served at the “first” Thanksgiving, there is no real evidence of it happening. Most historians believe that deer and ducks or geese were eaten.
- At the turn of the 19th-century turkeys were a common dish on many tables…not just for holidays.
- Most families kept turkeys for the sole purpose of eating them. Turkeys were big enough to feed large families.
- Sara Hale is believed to have played a large role in bringing the turkey to the center of the Thanksgiving meal. She wrote a book called Northwood that described a Thanksgiving meal with a roasted turkey as the centerpiece.
- Turkey continues to be the star of Thanksgiving. It is plentiful and inexpensive.
WHAT COLOR ARE TURKEYS?
Typically I see turkeys colored in many bright colors.
What color are turkeys in reality?
Wild turkeys are typically brown with a band of iridescent feathers that are green, red, bronze, copper and gold.
Domestic turkeys like you would see on a farm come in more color varieties. Many have white feathers.
There is no limit to the colors you might see on a turkey…except maybe pink and purple, LOL.
