FACTS ABOUT THE POEM

Dr. Clement C. Moore, a professor at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, crafted this enduring piece. His words have shaped the idea of Santa Claus for generations. Making it a staple of Christmas activities and bedtime stories on Christmas Eve. Dr. Moore wrote ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas' in 1823. It was a written as a straightforward, lovingly and imaginatively created gift for his kids.

Dr. Moore's acquaintances recognized the style. Eventually verified as the author, even though he published it under a pseudonym. Our contemporary conception of Santa Claus was influenced by his endearing portrayal of St. Nick. Who had a “droll little mouth” and a “stump of a pipe” clutched in his teeth.

The image of St. Nick is one of friendliness, with a belly “like a bowlful of jelly” and a “wink of his eye”. Dr. Moore even gave each reindeer a name. Adding to the charm and excitement as they flew over “the top of the porch”. As well as “top of the wall” with the speed of a “wild hurricane fly.”

Over time, Moore’s words and images have become a timeless part of holiday lore. Including artists like Miss Jessie Willcox Smith creating iconic illustrations based on the poem. His lively “bundle of toys,” his team of “tiny reindeer,” and their “wild hurricane fly” as they dash through the night have since become iconic.

Moore’s descriptions, from the “breast of the new-fallen snow” to Santa’s “wink of his eye,” bring each moment to life in a way that’s both magical and vivid. While copyright laws have long since expired, making it part of the public domain, the poem's charm remains. It's a favorite for gift exchanges, printable games, and even white elephant games at holiday parties.
