I love dessert, but don't always have the time needed to make homemade desserts. Some of my favorite kitchen hacks are finding shortcuts with my cooking! This Upside Down Apple Pecan Pie will taste totally homemade even though it is quick and simple to make thanks to a frozen store-bought apple pie!
I always want to take a delicious homemade dessert to Easter lunch with my family, but who has the time on Easter morning to create a masterpiece in the kitchen? I definitely don't have the time! We are rushing around with Easter baskets, hunting eggs, and getting ready for church….making a dessert from scratch just isn't in the cards!
I decided to make an Upside Down Apple Pecan Pie this spring but honestly didn't have the time to make the apple pie portion from scratch. I decided to make the dessert using a frozen apple pie from the grocery store instead and save myself a ton of time! Many of the frozen pies are just like homemade.
Ingredients Needed to Make an Upside Down Apple Pecan Pie
- 1 frozen apple pie
- 4 Tablespoons of melted butter
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
How to Make an Upside Down Apple Pecan Pie
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
First, you will melt your 4 Tablespoons of butter in a small bowl.
Next, you will combine the brown sugar and pecans into the bowl with the melted butter and stir to combine the ingredients.
Now you will take the frozen pie out of the freezer and out of the box. Lay a piece of wax paper down on the counter and take your pie out of the pie pan it is in and sit the pie on the wax paper. You can use the pie pan the pie came in, but if you have a deep-dish pie pan it will work a little better.
Take your deep-dish pie pan (or regular pie pan) and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Now place a piece of parchment paper over the pie pan and spray the parchment paper with nonstick cooking spray also. You can cut the paper down or just let the extra hang out…it doesn't matter!
Now you will spread the pecan mixture in the bottom of the pie pan (on top of the parchment paper) evenly.
Now you will place the frozen pie on top of the pecan mixture.
Bake the pie at 400 degrees F according to the package directions. You want the pie to be golden brown on top.
You may want to place a cookie sheet under your pie pan while it is baking in case any ooey-gooey goodness leaks out! This will save you from having to clean your oven. I would definitely recommend this if you are using a regular-sized pie pan.
When the pie is done cooking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Don't be surprised by a lot of “liquid” bubbling up around the sides of the pie. This is just the butter and brown sugar mixture. The 5 minutes the pie is cooling allows for this mixture to start to harden and forms that delicious gooey yumminess!
You can see in the picture below that was taken about 5 minutes after removing from the oven…that is some nice caramelization around the edges of the crust…it isn't burnt…the syrup-like stuff on the bottom of the pie has just caramelized along the sides!
Place a cake plate or platter over the pie firmly and flip it over so that the pie is upside down on your cake plate. Remove the pie pan gently and then carefully remove the parchment paper. Allow the pie to cool before cutting.
This is great served with a side of ice cream!
