Life is so digital now, but for some things I really prefer to go the traditional route. One of these areas is cookbooks! Cookbooks are just iconic of family to me and I want my children to appreciate the love and history that goes into so many of our favorite recipes. My kids are growing up so fast and I want them to have a family cookbook of the recipes our family LOVES.

Why You Should Create a Family Cookbook
Family Cookbooks Pass Down Traditions
I can't think of very many of our family traditions that don't involve food. Many of these special activities even have specific foods or recipes that we associate with that event! I LOVE family traditions and honestly feel heartbroken for families that don't have any. 🙁
The traditions we embrace are some that have been in my family for generations and I am determined to keep them going. I want my children and their children to be able to grab a cookbook and know they can find THAT special recipe inside to take to that family event!! 🙂
Your Love Will Be There When You Aren't
The older I get and the older my parents get…the more sentimental I get. I want to have things documented and scrapbooked for my kids to look back on.
I am so thankful to have some of my Grammy's recipes. She isn't here anymore, but her love lives on actively when I make one of her recipes. It is a way to feel close to those we can't be with anymore.
Some day I won't be here physically for my kids, but they will have something from me to use in their daily lives!! This is a great reason why you should create a family cookbook!
It is EASY to Create a Family Cookbook
Making a family cookbook is so easy to do. The hard part is deciding which recipes to include!!
I am using CreateMyCookbook to make our family cookbook and it has been a breeze. The cookbook designer is really simple to use even if you aren't a techie person!
Here are some pointers to get you started. 😆
Gather Up Your Recipes
First step is to gather up your recipes. Decide what you want to include in your cookbook. I gave this quite a bit of thought and decided our family cookbook would include recipes from both my side of the family and my husband's side of the family.
I chose recipes that we love and eat regularly and on special occasions. These are the recipes my kids are going to want to have some day.
I love the feature in CreateMyCookbook where you can upload photos. There will be some photos of recipe cards that have been handwritten by loved ones because it is heartwarming to see their handwriting!!
Add Your Recipes to the Book Two Ways
Once you have your recipes gathered it is time to start putting them into the cookbook. The CreateMyCookbook website makes it simple. You can type your recipes in or you can use the WeTypeIt feature. For the WeTypeIt all you do is upload a picture of the recipe and they will type it for you! This is great if you are short on time.
I am using a combination of both and it is awesome.
Personalize Your Cookbook
Being able to personalize a cookbook for my children makes it extra special. I am including stories to go along with some recipes. Talking about traditions that go along with certain recipes is another way I am personalizing our family cookbook.
Including photos is also a feature you can use in CreateMyCookbook. I am hoping to find some good photos of my kids making cookies with their Grammy!
Get Help With Your Family Cookbook
You can make your family cookbook a big family project. CreateMyCookbook has a “friends” feature. The friends feature lets you invite friends or family to submit recipes to your cookbook. This is an easy way to include recipes from loved ones without all the hassle.

We have a few family cookbooks and I love them. While I have the handwritten recipe cards too, there are many times I’ve pulled the cookbook for recipes just like grandma used to make even after she passed. It’s near and dear to my heart.
I made a family cookbook a number of years ago. I included who the recipe came from, what event or tradition it was associated with & who it was a favorite of. I also, included tips & options where I have adapted a recipe through the years. We discovered that while doing this, that certain recipes represent certain life seasons and/or people or places we lived. This book has become not only a collection of family recipes but a history of our life. It is still enjoyed by many & very special to me. When I made the cookbooks, I put them in 3 ring binders & every few years I will send supplements of new recipes & traditions or some that got overlooked the first time. My nieces, nephews, daughters & foster kids have really enjoyed them.
That is so nice…such a great way to document your family’s life!! It is fun that you add to it! Thanks for sharing!
