Moving Tips to Keep You Sane

We are moving in a few days, which has made our summer really hectic!  I will share some moving tips that have helped keep me sane during a crazy time!

Our Crazy Move Story

We were fortunate to get a contract on our house after only a month on the market.  Unfortunately, it was a contingency contract, and we didn't know when our buyer's home would sell.  So we decided to proceed with life normally, knowing it could take a long time.

I had booked a trip with my teenage daughter for early July, and of course…right after I bought the plane tickets, the buyer's house sold. Guess what…we were closing the DAY AFTER returning from our trip.  I hadn't packed ANYTHING yet….to say I was stressed was an understatement.  I even had an eye twitch for a day or two! 🙂

So, to make a long story short…I had to pack in a big hurry before our trip, and during that time, we also had a 4th of July party with about 25 people at our house! While I was out of town, my husband called and said that the closing date had been pushed back, so that gave me a little breathing room when we got back!  Here are some moving tips that helped me get through this summer move and saved me time!

Packing and Moving Tips

Have a Moving Sale Before Your Move

If you have the time and know you are planning to move….start sorting stuff early and have a big moving sale.  This will decrease the amount of “stuff” you must pack and take.  Look at your belongings and be willing to LET GO of items that aren't used regularly.

As soon as we decided to put our house on the market, I started going through as much as possible.  I had a big garage sale this past spring and got rid of a lot of stuff!  My rule was that anything that didn't sell would be donated…I took nothing home!!  You can read how I made over $1000 at that garage sale!!

Don't Underestimate How Long Packing Takes

Packing is time-consuming.  It takes a lot more time than most newbies realize.  Plan accordingly and allow yourself the time necessary to pack properly.  You don't want to have to throw your belongings into a garbage bag because you ran out of time!

Don't Underestimate How Many Boxes You Will Need

We have a lot of stuff…way too much stuff, and that is even after my big garage sale.  My in-laws moved last year and saved some of their boxes, which they kindly gave us.  I bought 60 more boxes from U-haul.  We got more boxes from local businesses, and I had several plastic tubs.  It never seemed to be enough. Items that are odd shapes take up a lot of room.  Breakable items have to be packed carefully.  You will need a LOT of boxes…get more than you ever thought you could need, and that may be enough, LOL!

Don't Forget Your Pets on Moving Day

If you have pets, you may need to make special arrangements for moving day.  Moving can be stressful for pets.  We have two cats, and they never go outside.  I remember when we moved 8 years ago, it was the first time they had been outside since they were kittens, and we first adopted them.  It occurred to me that I needed to have pet carriers available on a moving day and be ready to introduce our fur balls to their new home!  Some moving tips help us humans…and others help our animal friends, LOL!

Get Help From Professional Movers

Moving is hard work, and trying to do it all yourself can quickly become overwhelming. Let professional movers such as OzMoving.com long distance movers in NY handle the heavy lifting, packing, and logistics so you can focus on the important things, like settling into your new home and taking care of your family. Having experienced movers on your side makes moving day much less stressful and lets you enjoy the excitement of a fresh start.

Make Good Use of Your Limited Time

Our move has been delayed 3 times, and because of these delays, we are now getting close to school starting.  When we get moved, we have a lot of painting and unpacking to do.  So, I have to use every minute wisely and try not to procrastinate.

I can honestly say that moving is NO FUN, but sometimes it just has to be done!  Following these moving tips will help you be ahead of the game, and hopefully, it won't be too torturous!

  1. It’s definitely stressful to move. It’s important to pack ahead of the designated moving date and to make lists. I remember having to move in a rush as well, it wasn’t easy and we ended up unpacking for so much longer!

  2. Never underestimating how long it will take you to pack or how many boxes you need is so true. The last time I moved, I ordered a moving package from Uhaul, which came right to my door. I even made sure to order extra packing supplies because you never know.
