my dad is my heroMy dad is my hero and has been for as long as I can remember.  I could go on and on about the many reasons my dad is my hero, but today I am going to focus on one area….his service to the United States of America.

My Dad is an US Navy Veteran

My father served our country during a difficult time in our country's history….the Vietnam War.

My father knew that he was going to be drafted and he wanted to have a choice of which branch he served in with the military.  Our family has a rich history of service in the Navy and my dad wanted to continue that tradition.

My father enlisted in the United States Navy during his second year in college.  He was placed into Company 045 and went to San Diego for his training at the United States Naval Training Center in November of 1965.

My Dad Married During His Enlistment

My dad proposed to my mother during the early part of his enlistment and they were married when he was home on leave, July 2nd, 1966.  They are getting ready to celebrate 50 years of marriage….so I guess he proposed to the right woman!

My Dad is My Hero Because He Sacrificed for Our Country

I hear people talk about how military personnel sacrifice for our country.  I wonder if very many people stop to think about the actual sacrifices that are made by these people?

My dad didn't complete his college path due to his enlistment.  He had to plan his wedding around his military schedule.  He was far away from his wife and family for very long periods of time.  My dad was also in harm's way during war.  He saw friends and comrades killed in combat.  My dad sacrificed a lot to help keep our country free and help other nations live free.  It is easy to see why my dad is my hero!

Honoring Our Heroes

I was thrilled to see that the Kroger family of stores and Kleenex® Brand are working hard to HONOR OUR HEROES!

Did you know there are more than 2 million Americans serving on active duty or in the reserves today?  Honoring Our Heroes is Kroger's way of saying thank you to the active duty service members and our nation's 23 million veterans.   The Kroger Co. Family of Stores and the USO are working together to stand behind our nation’s military community.  Kroger stores have raised more than $14 million since 2010 to help support USO programs – the largest cumulative gift to the USO in its nearly 75 year history!

That is a great reason to shop at Kroger stores!!  I love supporting companies that support our military!!

Next time you are out shopping at Dillons be sure to pick up a few 4x Kleenex® Facial Tissue Bundle Packs and you will be helping to honor our heroes too!  Plus…you will be getting some great facial tissue!

Who is your hero?  Why are they your hero?  Do you have a family member who is currently serving in the military or who is a veteran?  I would love to hear your stories!
