How To Organize a Collection Drive in Your Local Community
Step One is to Decide What Organization You Want to Help
The first step in organizing a collection drive is to decide what organization you want to help.
One charity that my family loves to help is One Warm Coat®. Their mission is to provide a warm coat to anyone in need…totally free of charge. Last year we made Snowman Glove Crafts to help layer on love! I think this is a great organization to support and would encourage you to do a coat drive to help out!
It is exciting to see Coca-Cola™ at Walmart teaming up to make giving back easy.
Step Two is to Decide on a Timeline for Your Collection Drive
Decide how long you want to collect items for your drive. Set a timeline up and stick to your plan! It isn't necessary to hold a drive for months on end…it can be just as effective to do a one or two-week collection drive. Remember, many people work best under strict deadlines!
Step Three is Set a Goal for Your Collection Drive
It is common knowledge that people achieve more when they have goals. This is especially true with charity causes. People want to see charities reach their goals because they know more people will be helped!
Coca-Cola™ at Walmart have a goal of donating 500,000 coats to One Warm Coat®! That is an amazing goal and I know that we can help them reach it!! They reached the goal of helping over half a million people last year and they are hard at work to reach that goal for this year too.
Step Four is to Tell Everyone About Your Collection Drive
It is vital to the success of your collection drive that you let people know about it! Here are some easy ways to get the word out!
- Make flyers and hang them around town.
- Promote the drive on your personal Facebook page and other social media.
- Let your local radio station know about the drive. They may be willing to promote it on-air.
- Submit the information to your local newspaper.
- Tell your local schools and ask them to partner with you to collect items.
- Email all of your contacts about the drive and ask for their help.
- Ask your employer if you can promote the drive at work.
Step Five is to Tell People How They Can Help
It is important to be specific about how to help. People like to know exactly what they can do. This will increase the chances of a successful collection drive.
Coca-Cola's™ Layer on Love program at Walmart has made it so easy for us to help with the One Warm Coat campaign.
All you have to do is text LOVE to 501501 to donate $5 to One Warm Coat. This is a really quick and easy way for busy people to still make a difference. Did you know that a $5 donation provides 10 coats!!! WOW!!
Step 6 is to Deliver the Collected Items
The time has come to deliver all of the items you have collected. Be sure to check with everyone who has been willing to assist you in your collection drive.
Take your donations to your local charity and know you have done some good for others this season.
Keep This In Mind if the Collection Drive Gets Hard
I am not going to lie…collection drives can be a lot of work. There may be times you think that the effort and time required is too much.
Remember….for most people when we get cold we just grab our coat or jacket. Unfortunately, for the 15% of the population who live in poverty…a winter coat is a luxury that isn't in the budget. You are making a BIG difference in someone's life by helping them stay warm this winter and for winters to come!!
One thing I like to do is grab some Coca-Cola™ when I am at Walmart and then I can treat myself when I am busy sending emails and promoting my coat drive! I love the crisp, cold taste when it has been chilled at 37 degrees!!
How Are You Helping Others This Season?
