It is TRAVEL season….and traveling is one of my favorite things to do, BUT….traveling with a toddler who is potty training can be HARD!! I am on the downhill side of potty training my youngest and last child….so I have actually traveled while potty training 4 kids over the past 16 years or so!! Let's just say…I have been there….done that, LOL! I hope these potty training tips for traveling will make your trip a little less stressful!
Potty Training Tips for Travel
Continue Potty Training Reward System While Traveling
Reward systems are a staple when it comes to potty training toddlers. Travel can throw a kink in potty training as it is…so your best bet is to TAKE ALONG YOUR REWARD SYSTEM! If you are using a sticker chart….take it along!! If you are giving some kind of treat….take those treats along! This will help your toddler feel consistency in your potty time expectations!
Public Restroom Preparation is a Must
When we are traveling we usually encounter a variety of public restrooms…..some nice…some scary! You know those times you are driving and driving and driving…..and you JUST HAVE TO GO….so you stop somewhere that you normally wouldn't….and you enter a bathroom that you later have nightmares about? Maybe you don't have these fun experiences….but we do, LOL! Last time we traveled with a potty training child we had to do a LOT of stopping and I will just say that the bathrooms left a lot to be desired.
Your child may have fears of toilets….falling in, water splashing up on them, etc. You may want to take along one of those cool fold up portable potty seats that you can put on the toilet seat so your child is more comfortable.
Your child may not like the automatic flushing toilets that are everywhere now. You can always cover the sensor up before they sit down so it doesn't flush suddenly and scare you kiddo to death!
Don't forget about the fact that sometimes public restrooms don't have TOILET PAPER or paper towels handy. I always keep some Cottonelle® FreshCare® Cleansing Wipes with us. These are perfect for cleaning my little one's bottom and so much more! I love that these wipes are alcohol-free and are so gentle on my little one's skin!
Be Prepared for the Unexpected
I take lots of extras along…lots of extra clothes, panties, socks and even SHOES! Yes…my daughter has had accidents and actually soaked her tennis shoes with pee! It would stink if I had to go buy new shoes while out-of-town!!
Traveling for us typically means that my kids will sleep a LOT at times they normally wouldn't! I always put my daughter in Pull-Ups® Learning Designs® Training Pants in the car because I never know when she will fall asleep. She still has trouble with staying dry during sleeping times. She is in the stage of potty training when she normally wears panties a lot during the day….but she doesn't bat an eye putting on her Doc McStuffins Pull-Ups while we are driving!
As a mom I love the Pull-Ups® Potty Partnership that helps parents potty train their children! The Pull-Ups® Potty Partnership is a personalized, comprehensive program that is tailored to work with your child’s unique personality, on their schedule and according to how they learn. They know that the key to success in potty training is working with your child’s personality, not against it! Here is a video all about it!
My daughter loves when I buy her Pull-Ups® Learning Designs® Training Pants at Sam’s Club® because they have a bonus Doc McStuffins BACK PACK inside!!
She is all about Doc McStuffins right now!! You can tell by her picture that she was excited…the picture is a little blurry because she was JUMPING she was so excited about her new backpack! 🙂
She went right to work playing with her babies with her backpack on!
This backpack is the perfect size for travel too! You can fit your Pull-Ups® Training Pants, Cottonelle® FreshCare® Flushable Cleansing Cloths, an extra set of clothes and some small toys to keep your little one busy!! Your child can even wear the backpack themselves to give them a little independence!
I am all about saving money and right now you can save even more when you visit your local Sam’s Club® and purchase any two Pull-Ups® Training Pants and/or Cottonelle® FreshCare® Flushable Cleansing Cloths between 5/31/16 – 6/30/16 so you can get a $10 Sam’s Club® e-Gift Card. I love EXTRA savings!! These were the first two items in my cart at Sam’s Club®!
Remember to Have Fun and Relax a Little
I am not going to lie….even if you follow all the potty training tips for travel you can find…your child may still regress a little in their potty training during or after your trip. It isn't the end of the world and I think it is more important to have FUN then to stress out too much! There will always be more time to potty train, right?? My advice is to plan ahead, be prepared, enjoy yourself and let your little one enjoy their new experiences too!
I would love to hear what your funniest potty training while traveling story is….do you have any real horror stories to share?? You may also want to win some extra $$$ for travel this summer….just head over to Sam's Club and share a family photo for your chance to win a $500 Sam’s Club® Gift Card!!
