TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT THE WEATHER
We have some crazy weather here in Kansas. Our kids have done well with tornado warnings and other weather anomalies, but it helped if we talked to them before the wild weather hit.
I love to talk to my kids while they are coloring. It is a great time to start a conversation.
Here are some tips to talking to your kids about scary or severe weather:
- Talk to kids about the facts and science behind the weather.
- Remember that children may not understand why we have severe weather and might feel scared when it happens. This is normal.
- Don't wait until the tornado siren is going off to go over your family's severe weather safety plan with your kids!
- Talk to kids about all kinds of weather, not just the scary weather events.
- Let the children ask questions they may have about the weather.
- Check out the great resources FEMA has for children that teach about natural disasters.
- Let the kids know that you have a plan for bad weather.

BOOKS ABOUT WEATHER
Another good way to introduce the topic of weather to children is by reading books.
There are some really good books available that break the science of weather down to a child's level. It can be hard for me to simplify certain topics for my kids and books can help me a lot.
