WHAT KIND OF MEAT IS USED?
Chicken fried steak is not typically made with chicken. It is called chicken fried steak because the crunchy breading reminds people of fried chicken.
Traditional chicken fried steak recipes are made using cube steaks which are beef.
Another popular dish is chicken fried chicken which is made using a thin piece of chicken instead of steak.
Some people will use other kinds of steak, but it will need to be tenderized and pounded thin with a meat mallet.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED
This is a very traditional chicken fried steak recipe that the whole family will gobble up! It is healthier since it isn't being fried in a pan of oil!
- Cubed Beef Steaks
- Salt and Pepper
- Egg
- Buttermilk
- All-Purpose Flour
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Smoked Paprika
- Cayenne Pepper
For the Gravy
- Butter
- All-Purpose Flour
- Milk
- Freshly cracked Black Pepper Salt to Taste

HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER CHICKEN FRIED STEAK WITH GRAVY
If you are going to the trouble to make Air Fryer Chicken Fried Steak then you definitely want to take a few minutes to make some gravy too. It is the perfect partner to the steak!

STEP ONE: MIX SEASONINGS
Start off by seasoning the cube steaks with salt and pepper, to taste and set them aside.
In a shallow bowl combine the egg with buttermilk and a pinch of salt and whisk well until smooth.
In a separate shallow bowl mix together all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt. Stir these so they are mixed well.

STEP TWO: COAT STEAKS
Taking one seasoned cubed steak at a time, dip it first into flour mixture then into the buttermilk-egg mixture, and then finally back into flour mixture.
Repeat with the remaining cubed streaks.

STEP THREE: AIR FRY
Lightly grease the air fryer basket with olive oil spray and place the prepped cubed streaks in it. Leave a little room between steaks so they cook evenly. Cook in batches if necessary.
Air fry at 400F for 4 minutes. Flip and continue to air fry at 400F for another 4 minutes. 8 minutes in total. Repeat with the remaining streaks.

STEP FOUR: MAKE GRAVY
While the cube steaks are in the air fryer you can whip up some gravy!
Add the butter and flour to a medium sauce pan.
Cook over medium heat until the butter is melted and the raw flavor of the flour is gone. About 1 to 1½ minutes.
Whisk in the milk, salt, black pepper.
Keep whisk continuously over medium-high heat, until the mixture begins to thicken.
Pour the gravy over the air fried chicken fried steaks and serve immediately.
