WHAT ARE SPRING ROLLS?
Spring rolls are a famous Chinese appetizer enjoyed by many people around the world. They are sometimes mistaken to be egg rolls in other countries as well. Traditionally, spring rolls were served to celebrate the coming of the Chinese New Year which is during spring. Now you know why it's called a “spring” roll.
Nowadays, because spring rolls are so addictingly yummy, people eat them whenever they want. It can be eaten as a snack, appetizer, and even for dinner or lunch.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPRING ROLLS AND EGG ROLLS?
Spring rolls and egg rolls can be confusing since they look the same and both taste delicious in their own ways. But, once you know the difference between the two you can easily tell which is which. Here is a list of their differences:
- Wrapper
Spring rolls are made with thin ones like rice wrappers or thin flour-made wrappers. On the other hand, egg rolls are usually wrapped in a thicker one. Also, egg roll wrappers are dipped in egg wash for a crispier exterior.
- Filling
Spring rolls are usually filled with fresh vegetables which are mixed with uncooked meat or seafood. And in egg rolls, the fillings are always cooked with a lot of seasonings since the wrappers are thicker.
- Preparation
The outer layer of egg rolls is much more bubbly and crispy because they are typically fried or deep-fried. Meanwhile, spring rolls can either be baked, fried, or in some cases not cooked at all (apart from the filling).
TYPE OF SPRING ROLLS
There is a wide variety of spring rolls. Asian countries made their own special version of spring rolls. Each one has its unique delicious flavors and is prepared differently. Here are some of the known kinds of spring rolls:
- Hong Kong
The hong kong style dim sum spring rolls contain ground pork, shredded carrots, bean sprouts, and sometimes other vegetables. It is also fried and it comes with its own dipping sauce.
- Philippines
Spring rolls in the Philippines are called lumpia. The filling for lumpia is chopped carrots, green beans, and meat – either shrimp, chicken, beef, pork, or mixed. There are 2 types of lumpia in the Philippines, fried and fresh. Fried lumpia are dipped in vinegar or sweet chili sauce. While the fresh lumpia has its own peanut butter sauce.
- Vietnam
Lots of people love the fresh taste of gỏi cuốn or summer rolls. The typical ingredients of a Vietnamese roll include cooked pork, shrimp, sometimes chicken or tofu, fresh herbs like basil or cilantro, lettuce, and cucumbers, all wrapped in moistened rice paper. These are served with a hoisin peanut sauce.
Fresh Vietnamese rolls can easily be made at home or found at Vietnamese restaurants and even in some grocery stores.
HOW TO COOK SPRING ROLLS IN AN AIR FRYER OVEN?
Another method you can do for these handheld snacks is to cook them in an air fryer oven. So, if you don't have a countertop air fryer, this would be ok too. Here are the directions for cooking in an air fryer oven:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F if your air fryer oven requires preheating.
- Place frozen spring rolls in a single layer on the air fryer oven racks. Do not overcrowd.
- Cook for 15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Note: you don't need to put oil on these for cooking this in an air fryer oven. They come out crispy without any extra oil!
FAVORITE DIPPING SAUCE FOR SPRING ROLLS
Spring rolls are already good on their own. But, if you want to add some extra flavor to your crispy rolls, here is a list of great dipping sauces that would go great with spring rolls:
- Vinegar
- Sweet Thai Chili Sauce
- Plum Sauce
- Chili Garlic Sauce
- Worcestershire
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE FROZEN SPRING ROLLS IN THE AIR FRYER?
For this, you will only need one thing!

HOW TO COOK FROZEN SPRING ROLLS IN AIR FRYER?
Once you have your frozen spring rolls, you can now go ahead and start cooking. Follow the instructions below for the best results!
STEP ONE: PREHEAT AIR FRYER
The first thing you're going to do is preheat your air fryer to 400°F. If your air fryer does not have a preheat setting you can skip this step.
STEP TWO: PLACE FROZEN SPRING ROLLS
Once your air fryer is ready, place the frozen spring rolls in a single layer inside the basket. You won't need to add any oil to the basket. Also, make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket.
STEP THREE: COOK SPRING ROLLS
Set the cooking time of the air fryer to 8 minutes. Then, just wait for your spring rolls to be air-fried until golden brown and crispy. No need to turn them since your using an air fryer it will be cooked on all sides.
STEP FOUR: SERVE
When the spring rolls are done cooking, remove them from the basket and allow them to sit for a minute or 2. This will make the spring rolls crispier.
After that, grab your favorite dipping sauce, serve and enjoy!

Place frozen spring rolls in a single layer in the air fryer basket. No oil is needed. Don’t overcrowd the basket.
