WHAT KIND OF BREAD WORKS BEST FOR AIR FRYER FRENCH TOAST STICKS?
There is no limit to the types of bread that taste great made into French toast sticks. I love to use up bread that is hard and close to being thrown out.
If you are buying bread specifically for French toast sticks here are some great options:
- Wheat Bread
- White Bread
- Challah Bread
- Brioche Bread
- Sourdough Bread
There are a few breads that may not taste as good. I wouldn't try rye bread, focaccia bread, or pita bread for this recipe.
ARE FRENCH TOAST STICKS HEALTHY?
This recipe is made using whole grain bread which adds some healthy nutrients. I also substituted Splenda for sugar to bring down the calories.
I believe that the danger from French toast sticks is the toppings after they are made. Adding a lot of butter, syrup and powdered sugar can really increase the calorie count and sugar content.

HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST STICKS IN THE AIR FRYER
I absolutely love how French toast sticks taste when they are made in the air fryer. You won't mess with a skillet again after you try air frying!
STEP ONE: CUT BREAD
Take your slices of bread and cut them evenly into strips. I like to get three “sticks” from each slice. Now set these aside for the moment.
STEP TWO: COMBINE WET INGREDIENTS
In a medium bowl, combine the egg, milk, Splenda, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and salt. Whisk these together until they are well-combined.
STEP THREE: ADD OIL
Lightly spray the bottom of the air fryer basket with oil just so the bread won't stick. This will also give your bread a lovely fried crust.
STEP FOUR: DIP BREAD
Once you've finished mixing up your wet ingredients, coat the bread sticks in the mixture. Be sure to cover all sides of the bread.
STEP FIVE: PLACE BREAD IN THE AIR FRYER
When all the bread sticks are coated, place them in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. You might have to cook them in batches. Repeat the process for the remaining French toast sticks.
STEP SIX: SET TEMPERATURE
For best results, set the air fryer to 400F for 4 minutes. Flip and air fry again at 400F for another 2 minutes.
STEP SEVEN: SERVE
Remove the French toast sticks from the air fryer and repeat for the other batches of bread. Serve immediately with sugar-free maple syrup.
