I like Thanksgiving….I love what it stands for. I admit that it isn't my favorite holiday….but thinking back on past Thanksgivings does bring up one of my favorite memories!
I grew up in the same small town where I currently live. It was the town that my dad grew up in….we were really fortunate to have my paternal grandparents right there in town all my life. My mother's family lived a little further away. My maternal grandma and my aunt were our closest relatives on my mom's side of the family. They lived a couple of hours away and Thanksgiving was THEIR holiday! We always went to Coffeyville on Thanksgiving.
One of my favorite childhood memories is what we did on our drive home from Coffeyville every year. It was always dark…we were driving in Kansas…basically in the middle of nowhere…so radio stations were few and far between back then. One year we started singing Christmas carols…and then we just kept doing it every year! We would sing every Christmas carol we could think of…and we would laugh and laugh because we couldn't always remember all the words. It was hilarious to hear us try to remember the 12 Days of Christmas…we got it wrong year after year….and it never stopped being funny!
I loved those nights, singing in the car with my family. It was such a simple thing…but one that meant so much. Thinking back on those cold, dark Thanksgiving nights brings tears to my eyes. I am so thankful that I had parents who would sing wrong lyrics to Christmas carols with their kids…who would laugh and cut up with us…who loved us unconditionally! I am grateful for the strong family traditions we had and I hope I am passing many of those traditions on to my children!
I guess it is funny that my favorite Thanksgiving memory….involves Christmas carols!! 🙂
I would love to hear what your favorite Thanksgiving memory is…feel free to share!
