- The first earth day was in 1970 and was organized by Senator Nelson. He wanted a way to bring environmental issues to the forefront of people's minds.
- Earth day went global after about 20 years. In 1990 there were demonstrations in 141 countries around the world. There were an estimated 200 million people who mobilized to bring attention to important environmental issues.
- Earth day has impacted the US government and they have responded with legislation to help the environment.
- April 22nd is the official day for Earth Day every year. This is because that was the day of the very first earth day celebration.
- There have been many global earth day initiatives that have really impacted our world for the better. In 2011 there were 28 million trees planted in Afghanistan.
- 2020 marked the 50th year of Earth Day.
