Easy Ways to Help Your Kids Tackle the Summer Heat
Drink Enough Water
One of the most obvious things you can do to make sure your child stays healthy in the summer heat is, of course, to make sure that they drink enough water throughout the day, especially during the hottest hours of the day. These hours are typically between 10 am and 4 pm.
Ideally, you’re going to want to help them drink a minimum of two liters a day, perhaps even more on the hottest days. You know your children better than anyone which is why you need to be vigilant when they’re playing outside.
If your kids get sick of drinking water you can add hydration by giving them homemade popsicles, flavored water or even letting them suck on ice cubes!
Consider What Food You Eat
When it’s hot, it’s typical that you’ll opt for BBQs and hot food but eating cooler foods like salads and fruit can be a great way to stay hydrated and to keep your children healthy while playing in the summer sun.
What’s more, you could even make smoothies by blending up fruits and adding ice! If you want to take things a step further, you can try freezing the smoothie and making popsicles or no churn ice cream.
Keeping fruit cold in the refrigerator is a great way to cool off….nothing better than a slice of ice-cold watermelon when you are outside playing!
Think About Shaded Areas
During the hottest parts of the day, you’ll want to aim to keep your children in a shaded area for around 10-15 minutes every hour that they are outside. This could be inside, under a tree, in a designated shady area of your garden or even in a playhouse.
When your children are inside the house and playing around in the hot areas of the house, setting up a portable AC unit can be a great way to cool down the air in these areas, ensuring that they remain cool here.
Use Sunscreen
Another essential when it comes to the hot weather of summer is using sunscreen. You’ll want to use a minimum of an SPF30 brand and make sure you’re reapplying to every area of your child’s exposed skin every two hours. If your children are playing with water, you’ll want to reapply more often.
Not only will this create a protective layer on your child’s skin to help protect them from harmful UV rays that have been associated with some kinds of cancer and skin problems, but you can also protect against burning and heat stroke.
Give Your Children Hats
When it comes to the clothing that your children are wearing in the hot weather, make sure that you're proactive when it comes to protecting their face. This means wearing a hat and even sunglasses to help the sun from burning their faces and getting into their eyes.
Your child’s face is one of the most sensitive areas of their body’s which is why you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing everything you can to protect it.
I know most parents are quick to put a hat on a baby…but older kids need head protection too! There are some really cute hats that have built-in UV protection.
Play Water-Based Games
Water is one of the best ways to stay cool, whether that’s in the form of a water balloon fight, sprinklers, playing in a pool or paddling pool, or even a sponge fight if your children are smaller. Of course, you’ll need to make sure that you’re following the water rules to maximize safety.
We love to play water games on our trampoline too! This is especially fun when friends come over.
